Fuerteventura Airport

Fuerteventura International Airport

The international Airport of Fuerteventura (FUE), owned by Aena, is the main tourist and commercial entrance and ascent route: it represents a great engine for the economy of the island. It is 5 km away from the capital town, Puerto del Rosario, in the area of El matorral. It was built in 1969 and expanded and improved in 1994. There are about 48,000 operations per year, with traffic of more than 6 million passengers. Inside you can find public shopping areas with bar and diner, some shops and the offices of car rental and transportation companies. There are 66 passenger control slots and 24 boarding doors with passport control facilities, with 12 aerial access walkways (one every two doors). At the moment the VIP room is about to be completed, while a project is being developed for a new cargo platform.

A few minutes from the airport is the main car park (surcharge) that allows long stops.

Shops and Duty Free

There are major commercial brands, such as Hudson and Desigual, a local for the sale of articles derived from the skilful use of lava, a local with specific products based on Aloe (one of the strengths of the trade of Fuerteventura), Victoria’s Secret, Ocean Company and many more.

There are some bars with diner and shops for selling typical products, such as Thinking Canarias and all fruits and a well-stocked pharmacy.

In the duty-free area you will find the classic free tax articles: there is a section perfumery, beverages and food, accessories and gadgets. Each area can be clearly identified by precise indication.

Connections from the airport

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to get around from the airport is the bus transport operated by Airport Express, which connects Puerto del Rosario with Caleta De fuste, Gran Tarajal and Morro jable. Other companies, with the classic Guagua (bus) can connect directly with the tourist centers of North and south, with lower costs but with long travel times, due to the numerous stops.

Rent a car

If you are more inclined to drive, you can rent a car in one of the many open agency of the airport: beware however, because if you arrive in a certian period of the year there could be problems finding a car easily. We recommend to book in advance the chosen car in the most crowded months (July-September), to avoid the risk of having to settle for a small car (or too big) or to pay a unreasonable amount.

The main companies are Avis, Hertz, Cicar, Payless, Autoreisen, Europcar and Goldcar. For the latter pay attention to the point of tha car-collection: generally to recover it you will have to take a connection shuttle to reach the commercial area of El Matorral.

Taxi service is available (official and abusive). We recommend to use the official service, because mostly it will be clear how much you go to pay and generally proves to be cheaper than the other one. The cost is €0.55 per kilometer, with initial shot of €3.45.

Main international cities served

Fuerteventura International Airport connects all major cities in Europe, including northern Scandinavian countries, England and Ireland. The best companies, such as Lufthansa, Iberia and Tui, fly very frequently, alongside low cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet. In general, before booking, look on the web to get a general idea of costs: lately (at least as far as Italy) have risen a lot, so it is advisable to book in time to find flights even at 35-€50.
